Can Bike Safe Cycling Clinic in N’land County Schools
Cycle Transitions has recently begun delivering a series of Can Bike safe cycling clinics at Northumberland County schools. A grade 4 or 5 class of five elementary schools, ones in Colborne, Grafton and Brighton, are receiving these. The clinics are being organized by the Ontario Provincial Police and assisted by the OPP axillary team.
The students are learning the skills to handle their bike safely, the rules of the road (being aware of the fact that they are considered a “vehicle” when riding of the road), and how to ride safely on the road.

Summer Student Employee Needed – CT Looking To Hire
Cycle Transitions is pleased to announce that it has again secured a Canada Summer Works grant for the purposes of hiring a student to work in the shop. This is a repeat of the last three years – very successful endeavours – where our summer employee tended to the shop, assisted patrons and took care of sales. This year we will hire another student to fill that role.
This is a call for applicants; if you know of someone who could ably fill this role, please have them send their cover letter and resume to Bruce Bellaire – brucebellaire@gmail.com or Rick Nonnekes – rnonnekes@gmail.com. Our application deadline is May 15, the projected start date to be near the end of May or the beginning of June. The grant allows for 9 weeks at 30 hours per week with an hourly pay rate at $15. A copy of the job description can be found here.

Cobourg receives Bicycle Friendly Communities Award
The Town of Cobourg recently received provincial recognition at the 10th Annual Ontario Bike Summit Awards with a Bronze Award as a new Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC).
The Town of Cobourg achieved Bronze after having been engaged in the BFC Program for years and receiving Honourable Mentions in 2015. The Town of Cobourg took the feedback prepared by an expert panel of judges and put that feedback into action by creating new programs and projects to make cycling more accessible.
Bruce Bellaire, Paul Mills and Rick Nonnekes – all members of Cycle Transitions – worked closely with the Town on the applications and efforts to achieve the status. This was part of a larger effort by Sustainable Cobourg’s Bicycle Action Committee to advocate for more safe cycling infrastructure in the town. It is the hope that the report accompanying the award can be used as a template for more improvements to the infrastructure.
In the picture above, Bruce, Councilor Forrest Rowden and Deputy Director of Public Works, Laurie Wills showed off the award to Cobourg Council.
